Spring Message from Mayor Smith

Happy spring to all. It has been a long cold winter and we all welcome the warmer weather and longer days.

As spring has finally arrived it brings the sound of hammers and compressors once again to fill the air with the birds, both of which signal new beginnings in much of Union Beach. A reminder that as you continue with your construction, please keep in touch with our building department for the latest information regarding new construction and reconstruction.

If you need any assistance either financially or emotionally we have a wonderful group of volunteers and staff who stand willing to aid you in finding the help you need. Do not hesitate to come by Borough Hall where the Seniors Room remains as a central point to get information.

Shortly after the storm, I authorized the formation of a Planning Committee to lay out a detailed plan for the re-building of Union Beach. This committee was made up of residents, Council members and professionals. The committee has created a detailed “Strategic Recovery Planning Report”. This report is beneficial to providing direction to the Borough as we rebuild. It will go to the State Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and this document is instrumental in securing additional grant money to aid in our rebuilding. I am recommending that the governing body adopt this report at the April 17th Council meeting. At that time the report will be available for all to read on this website.

Some other issues that the Mayor and Council have been working on recently include

  •  We have been in contact with the utility companies to make sure that the roads where new pipe has been installed in recent months will be repaired to our satisfaction
  • The reconstruction of the beachfront is slated to be completed by Memorial Day weekend
  • The Army Corp of Engineers Flood Control Project remains on target for construction to begin 2015. The governing body continues to meet with the ACOE each month for project updates
  •  Road construction projects which will help alleviate flooding at some key intersections will begin this spring utilizing FEMA grant monies along with borough funds
  •  We have hired an additional PT Clerk in the Construction Office to help the residents get through that office more quickly. The Construction office will continue to be closed to the public on Wednesday so the staff can work on paperwork
  •  We have passed an ordinance which will hold the banks more accountable for maintaining abandoned properties. This will improve the quality of life for the residents and increase property values for the neighborhood.

The entire Governing Body would like to wish you all a happy and healthy spring. Remember that if there is anything that I or any member of the Council can do to help you, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our contact information is posted on this website.
